The Digital Credentials Consortium (DCC), founded in 2018, is an international network of 12 higher education institutions that works in the field of digitizing learning records using a shared, open architecture . As the prospect of issuing digital credentials en masse has grown, the founding members thought their institutions could benefit from a broader technological infrastructure that allowed for the issuing and verification of credentials in this form. The leaders of the initiative were interested in developing a set of shared resources and tools to support this and ensure that it was done in a standardized manner to make the process of digitizing records more efficient and useful for learners, employers, and higher education institutions. They formed the DCC, with the goal of creating a “trusted, distributed, and shared infrastructure that becomes the standard for issuing, storing, displaying, and verifying digital academic credentials.”
